A complete renovation of a tired 70s Lockwood house has resulted in a stunning contemporary retreat that sits comfortably within its semi-rural, alpine setting. The transformation involved stripping the 160sqm house back to its shell and reworking the interior using insulated plasterboard. It was thermally glazed to maximise heat retention in winter and keep it cool in summer.

Solid oak parquet flooring, custom oak joinery and a concrete fireplace in the living area make for a very special space. All three bedrooms open onto decking for the ultimate in indoor-outdoor flow. A solid granite kitchen benchtop and marble bathrooms further emphasise the attention to detail that has gone into every part of the project.

The same care has gone into the exterior, which has detailed vertical, dark-stained shiplap cedar. It was important to the client to protect the established trees on site, which made for some interesting logistics. Working within the constraints of the existing home, the renovation delivers a result that’s worlds away from the original and provides the owners with a warm, comfortable and stylish retreat.
